This year has just been incredible and continues to be. We’ve had the opportunity to work on fashion shows, make television appearances and get away on creative trips. The most recent trip was a weekend in New York to work with one of my Hair Hero’s…………….ORIBE (pronounced “ore-bay”).

Oribe is a very well known editorial stylist and was a creative contributor to the birth of the “super model” era. He also launched the early looks of Jennifer Lopez. He worked very closely with Gianni Versace on all his looks and shows. He has worked and continues to work with the most famous of them all, models, actors, and socialites.

Earlier this year, we took on his product line that he launched and it was an instant love affair. His products do exactly what they say they are going to do and we are excited to be working with him and his product line.

There were 50 salons invited from across the USA. Not only were we invited but we were also 1 out of 8 salons that were asked to talk to all the other salon owners in a section of the weekend that was dedicated to sharing ideas with some of the top salons in the country. What an honor!

ROSIE

Day 1

Aubrey and I are so excited ...we both didn't really know what to expect but again so excited!!

I know you’re thinking, “Rosie must not get out much”, but on the contrary. I do. This was an extra special weekend that we were about to enjoy.

We arrive to Chelsea Piers where the venue is held. As we walk in we can see everyone checking in, getting their goody bags, mingling and getting to know each other.

We were greeted by our rep for ORIBE. We then walked into this huge open loft style room with white walls, cement floors and a stage.

AMAZING so far and ORIBE hadn't even started speaking! I'm in awe!

Okay! So we sit down and music comes on. ORIBE comes to the stage and does his thing. He is such a handsome, charismatic and down to earth man. I loved him instantly! He wooed us with his magic.

He starts to speak about what inspires him and how he prepares for cover shoots Vogue and Vanity Fair!!

He created three looks from beginning to end! The models were already to die for but he made them so gorgeous! I am truly inspired by this man! He put a fresh but old-school style to his hands of magic!

AUBREY
Day 1

We took the red-eye Friday night and landed early Saturday morning. We got to the hotel and quickly showered to wake us up. We raced over to the Chelsea Piers Studios where the event was held.

Upon arriving, we were given a signed copy of September Vogue with my home girl Charlize Theron on the cover. Oribe styled her for the shoot earlier in the month and we were given copies before they hit the shelf. WOW! Two of my favorite people in one magazine. And it’s signed to me - so cool!! This was a great way to start the weekend.

We were introduced to Oribe, a suave, handsome Cuban who still has a mischievous little boy smile. He came on stage and talked a bit about his exciting career and then proceeded to demonstrate some of his work on models for the rest of the day. So inspiring! What I love about him the most was his humility. He tries something and if it does not work he admits it and tries something else. There is no God-Like arrogance which I’ve witnessed from people who are much less talented!

His models looked amazing when he was done. And when the cameras were turned on for the actual photo shoot and the music was pumped up, I had tears in my eyes, because I was reminded once again how much I love what I do.

At the end of the first day we all gathered for a fabulous cocktail party. Everyone was on cloud nine.

ROSIE

Day 2

Again, so excited! Didn't know really what was going to happen but knew it was gonna be fantastic!

I walk into the huge warehouse of a room and it was set up like backstage of fashion week. Exactly what you see in magazines and television!

Each stylist had their own model and wig to work with. We also had a kit of products courtesy of ORIBE product line. Oribe, himself, comes in and presents his model. He shows us what the look and inspiration will be!

He instructs the room that we can do whatever we would like to the wig as long as we are creative. “Anything goes”, he said. We were given make-up to play with in order to complete the look. We had a mini photo shoot and runway shoot to show off our looks. It was amazing to see the seemingly endless parade of creative looks that came from all of the participants.

At the end of the day, we got our picture taken with the man himself. He is sooooo cool and energetic ...and magical!!

All in all it was a great weekend. I met so many cool people from all over the country. It also created a spark in myself again that I cannot wait to fire up...I didn't want to leave!!

Thank you to DNA for this opportunity. I can't wait to do more.

Day 2

I was pulled into the owners seminar while Rosie, Studio DNA’s lead creative stylist, did a workshop with Oribe along with 150 other stylists that came with their salon owners.

I was asked to give a five minute presentation about charity and the importance of having charity in business. It was well received and again I was extremely honored to be asked to talk at the event. I was also impressed by so many of the other salon owners. I learned so much from them about different ways to understand your business.

We then went back and joined the stylists to complete looks on models that were provided for us. Once the models were done under the instruction of Oribe, we were all ushered into another studio where all of us got to sit and watch our models come walking out in Fashion Show style with music pumping, cameras flashing and mouths gaping. The weekend ended with another fabulous cocktail party!

Conclusion

We met some amazing and truly inspiring people. We are very excited to have had this opportunity and look forward to a future with Oribe.

Oribe himself will be coming to Studio DNA in the New Year to do an exclusive class for all of our Studio DNA staff.

This trip was one of the many highlights of my career.

You asked and we listened. We are finally introducing late night Thursday's for those extremely busy moguls and socialites that have a hard time squeezing anything in during normal business hours. Family Equality To Honor Wanda Sykes at Annual Fundraising Dinner

This is the organization with whom we have aligned when it comes to Sam Sex Marriage Rights and the Equality in Marriage Debate. This organization views this fight as a debate over the sanctity of family and the protection of children. They are not shy about bringing our gay and lesbian families into the spotlight to show the rest of the country that these same sex relationships work hard, raise amazing children and contribute greatly to society. This was a huge missing in the original debate.

I hope you will join me in honoring Wanda Sykes and raising gobs of money to help propel this debate in 2010.

New Artist at Studio DNA - Eric Schwabel and His Many Faces

Studio DNA is proud to feature a local artist and dear friend on our Beverly Location walls. His faces series has always been a favorite of mine. Shot digitally and printed personally from the RAW file with absolutely no retouching using a carbon hexachrome system that he mixes himself, the end result is a compelling and mesmerizing exploration of the human face. From every day folk, to famour pedigree, Eric manages to capture all of them as equals.

About Eric

Eric Schwabel is a commercial and fine art photographer who was born and raised in Lake Elmo, Minnesota. He currently lives and works in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles, where he opened his studio in 2005. Schwabel has shot over a dozen covers and ad campaigns for Pepsi, TiVo and MTV, His subjects include actors, musicians, executives, philanthropists, athletes and random freaks, including transvestites and network executives.

Schwabel has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions in New York, Minneapolis and Los Angeles, and his work is held in private collections throughout North America, Asia, Africa and Europe. He has been published in a handful of books – Night Visions (Gmünder / 2008) Male Nude Next (Rizzoli / 2008), Undressed to Thrill (Blue, 2006), and is currently in production on two solo books of new work to be published in 2009. The first encompasses Schwabel’s fashion, editorial and personal work and will be published by Gmünder Deutschland. The second is a collection of portraits and interviews in collaboration with the Los Angeles Stage Alliance.

Schwabel’s career began at the age of 16 as a studio hand at Macy’s Advertising studio, learning how to operate a large format view camera and focus on technical skills and lighting. At age 18, Schwabel moved to New York to study photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Schwabel also studied at SPEOS Photographic Institute of Paris, eventually receiving his BFA in Applied Photographic Illustration from RIT in 2003.

Schwabel’s first publication came during college in the Australian art magazine Blue, also featuring an in-depth interview with the photographer. Following graduation, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career. In 2005, he opened Schwabel Studio in Venice Beach to return his focus to studio work. In 2007 the studio was expanded. Schwabel, now 28, still resides in Venice Beach. He will be teaching a five week workshop through SOCAPA (School of Cinematography and Performing Arts) in summer of 2008.

Managing an Online Reputation

Your customers are talking about you — and the whole world is listening.

Local review sites are reshaping the world of small business by becoming the new Yellow Pages, one-stop platforms where customers can find a business — and also see independent critiques of its performance.

How do you manage your reputation when everybody is a critic?

For some business owners, this is a terrifying prospect that seems more like mob rule than the wisdom of crowds. Negative reviews can hang an albatross around your neck if they appear prominently in search results. Happily, there is a big upside: referrals from happy clients are traditionally the best source of new business — and online forums are powerful word-of-mouth. The review process has been democratized.

But managing your online reputation requires a whole new skill set, including monitoring the online conversation and engaging with customers and the tech-savvy to promote yourself in the best channels. These skills are becoming essential for mainstream businesses. According to a survey by the Opinion Research Corporation, 84 percent of Americans say online reviews influence their purchasing decisions.

“Social media for business now is life or death,” said Dan Simons, a restaurateur in the Washington area who closely monitors these forums. “You could open a business and do everything right, but if you’re unaware of these social media you will perish. Social media can take a business and put a bullet in it.”

Monitor

Customers are abuzz with opinions — the only question is whether that buzzing reaches your ears. The first step is to tune in.

Do a vanity search of your business name and see what comes up. Are you easy to find? What is the first impression? Do you have a Web page and blog, and are they kept up do date? Is your business reviewed in online forums or blogs?

Try to see your business through the eyes of a customer. Indeed, customers increasingly shop with their browser. One study by the Yellow Pages Association and comScore found that local search for businesses, products and services grew 58 percent last year and reached 15.7 billion searches, more than a tenth of overall search traffic.

Study local search sites like Yelp, Citysearch and Yahoo! Local. Forums for customer feedback have sprung up everywhere —_Google Maps, Amazon, Angie’s List, TripAdvisor, OpenTable, Epinions and a myriad of online communities and niche sites.

“Know who the influencers are,” said Pete Blackshaw, executive vice president of Nielsen Online Digital Strategic Service and an expert on consumer-generated media. “There are going to be some megaphones that matter more than others.”

Build systems to stay on top of this online buzz. A Google alert can automatically inform you when your business is mentioned in a review, blog or online publication. Some review sites have features that automatically send e-mail alerts to business owners when a review is posted.

Twitter is becoming an increasingly popular microblogging platform for businesses and customers and you can keep track of what is being said about your company with tools like search.twitter.com, TweetDeck, or Twendz .

Manage

Once you’ve tuned into the online conversation, the tricky part is managing it.

Claim your listing on the local search sites. Many of these listings are free (although some sites offer premium services only to advertisers). The more detailed your profile, the more readily your business will appear in search results.

Responding to reviews is a delicate act of customer relations. A snarky review may make your blood boil — if so, step away from the keyboard and calm down until you can respond graciously.

“Hands down, when I’ve seen a conflict, it’s usually because the business owner is enraged, furious or personally hurt,” said Jeremy Stoppelman, chief executive and co-founder of Yelp. “Give yourself some time to cool off and engage in a respectful, courteous manner.”

You don’t need to respond to every review, especially if the overall consensus is positive. A negative review, however, demands special attention. Some business owners post public responses to apologize and try to win back the customer. Some privately message the reviewer.

Even hostile critics sometimes are mollified by a polite response from the merchant. “They are so disarmed,” said Mr. Simons, one of the owners of Founding Farmers restaurant in Washington. “I’ve had people immediately go back in and edit what they wrote.”

Jeff Diamond, co-owner of Farmstead Cheeses and Wines, with stores in Oakland and Alameda, Calif., responds to every review on Yelp — and he’s had more than 100. In one case, a reviewer complained that the person behind the counter was rude. Mr. Diamond sent a private message to the customer, apologized and asked for details. It turned out the employee who helped this customer was hard of hearing. By the end of the exchange, this onetime critic had joined the store’s wine club. He has since become a loyal customer.

“The most important thing is not to argue with your customer,” Mr. Diamond said. “It’s to listen to your customer. Try to put yourself in the customer’s place.”

Another no-no is posting false reviews. Don’t write fake reviews to puff up your business or trash a competitor. Businesses have been publicly exposed for shilling and suffered major embarrassment. Earlier this month, authorities said the cosmetic surgery clinic Lifestyle Lift would pay $300,000 in civil penalties after an investigation by the New York State attorney general’s office found that employees had posed as plastic surgery patients to write glowing reviews of their own business — a bogus grass-roots movement known as “astroturfing.”

“If you’re stuffing the ballot box and that is detected — which it almost inevitably will be — the backlash will be really significant and come back to bite you,” said Kara Nortman, senior vice president of publishing at Citysearch.

Indeed, the surest way to generate positive reviews is not to ghost-write them but to focus on good service. “It’s all common sense — the best way to ensure that you have positive reviews is to offer good products, good service, have integrity and be diligent,” said Greg Sterling, a San Francisco-based Internet analyst who specializes in small business and local search. “It’s really just the rules of dealing with people in the real world, translated online.”

Fortunately, online reviews can help you do just that. These reviewers are a virtual army of secret shoppers who are telling you exactly what works and what doesn’t.

Look for patterns. Are people consistently complaining about poor service? Are they constantly praising something that you can emphasize to differentiate your business?

At Founding Farmers in Washington, online reviews provide so much feedback that Mr. Simons stopped hiring secret shoppers. These comments have led managers to revamp how the front desk handles reservations and walk-ins, mark the vegetarian menu more clearly, coach servers who got bad reviews and even fire some employees.

“I would say 97 percent is genuinely useful,” said Mr. Simons. “You can tell the reviews that are written by a competitor or just someone who’s mean and angry. But generally people don’t go to a restaurant to get annoyed, and there’s at least some nugget of valuable information.”

Promote

These platforms do more than help you protect your good name. They can also serve as tools for marketing, analytics and aiming at customers.

Becoming an advertiser can buy you more ability to work the crowd. Benefits vary by site, but advertisers generally get more prominent display and other tools. On Yelp, advertisers can highlight a favorite review to appear at the top of their page (the other reviews are ordered according to how recent they are and how many user votes they received). On Citysearch, advertisers can get help with copywriting or video commercials and have their content pushed out to partner sites like MapQuest, AOL CityGuide and MySpace.

These platforms also can help business owners mine customer information. For example, Yelp has a dashboard that allows business owners to keep track of page views and offer promotions.

Danny Leclair, co-owner of Studio DNA hair salons in Los Angeles and Santa Monica, Calif., checks to see how many people come to his Yelp page — and often sees spikes in traffic after special offers or new reviews. He also uses tools like statcounter.com to see what pages his clients are coming from when they click on his site.

Once he started mingling in these online communities and using their tools, he got immediate traction. He said 50 percent of his new business now comes from Yelp, 30 percent from Citysearch and 10 percent from Google searches.

“My business began to grow exponentially,” Mr. Leclair said.

Head Bangin' Inspiration

For those who know me, they know that I do not bang my head willingly. I appreciate the music that inspires the act, but I don't do it and therefore, I don't listen to it regularly.

Then I meet this gorgeous, OC blonde at a meeting this week who hands me the EP for Avery Watts, a tall Thor-geous man. With a tone that is part warning and part ecstacy, she tells us that the music is hard, heart pounding rock. She tells me that this is not music she typically listens to, but this Avery man has won her musical soul. Which is why she has become his manager.

She tells me with almost manic enthusiasm that Avery has written lyrics that are inspirational and life affirming while exhalting them from a massive Bass/Drum dominated platform. I was instantly intrigued. The messenger and the delivery was not to be denied. (I also couldn't ignore his strong hold handshake eminating from his 6ft 4inch frame.)

I took the CD home and began tilting my head in rhythm. By track five, my head was in full bang and my soul surprisingly full of 'come together and create a new empowered world'-ness. It made me want to share.

So here I am sharing. With all of our patrons. Check this out. For those of you who are not so inclined to the rifts and to the beat, I can assure you that you can't deny the talent.

Gel's Create Control in a Chaotic World

On TNT’s celebrated series, Mad Men, we are given an inside look at the ‘Ad Man’ of the 1950s. Men and women alike are captivated by Don Draper and the men who inhabit this world: strong, virile, self-assured and perfectly manicured. Today’s man seems to be reaching back to a time when slick hair, pressed pleats, crisp shirts and dapper hats was an expression of your worth. They said, “I’m a contributing member of society, a charming party guest, a bon vivant sans excess.” But make no mistake; these affectations were purely for show. Beneath that tailored appearance beat the heart of a hunter, warrior, and lover.

We relate to these men, because we are becoming these men.

Today, we live in a time of economic uncertainty. We are enduring a conflict ridden world of strife. We are suffering the effects of greed and excess. This is not unfamiliar territory. We’ve been here before, remember? The Great Depression, two World Wars and a Global Oil Crisis.

During these uncertain times, we’re asked to button down and toe the line. Gone are the symbols of casual excess in our lives and in our style. The Hybrid vehicle has eclipsed the Hummer. The mansion has given way to the single family home. And our runways have shed the ‘bling’ and graced us with classic, understated lines invoking a look of responsibility and efficiency. We are men of worth, not boys at play.

This might explain the sudden resurgence of hair gel in the market place. Not since the 80s have we seen such interest in the immovable hair style. Most of these products were not on the market place a year or two ago. Perhaps because we were more freewheeling then, asserting our individuality and proclaiming our successes. Our mission was to acquire no matter the consequences. We were mavericks in style and composition and used whatever product would get us there.

Today, we are at the precipice of change (or according to President Obama, change we can believe in). In a world that has become noisy, messy and chaotic, it would seem that the more desirable man is one who has it under control – inside and out.

Thank you everyone who attended our first of many Blowdry Classes at Studio DNA. It was a packed house and everyone had a fantastic time.

Rosie and Tina Will Teach You How To Blow Dry

Do you try to style your hair only to spend an hour getting progressively frustrated? Is it a constant battle between you, your round brush and your blow dryer? Do you more often than not get frustrated and simply throw it up in a ponytail?

Everyone struggles to style their own hair, let alone achieve salon quality results. Whether your hair is long, short, curly, frizzy or straight, we can provide easy tricks of the trade that will help reunite you with your round brush and your blow dryer. We can even show you how to add curl or volume.

Bring a friend and work together! What sounds better than a beautiful Thursday summer evening in Santa Monica, sipping on sangrias and styling your hair. Now when someone asks you, "Who did your hair?" you can say "I did!" But do us a favor and eventually tell them who taught you how! ;)

Big Bouncy Curls Without the Frizz

Do you have problems styling your beautiful curly hair? Does it simply get too big, too 'fro or too frizzy? Can you never find the balance between hold, movement and body? Do you just want that famous Sex and the City Carrie Bradshaw curl on those days spent brunching and lunching? Well then get our your hair dryer and diffuser, and pick up some Bumble & Bumble Curl Crème and Does it All styling spray. Now put on some Nina Simone or Joss Stone and follow these instructions:

I recommend washing your hair with a shampoo that fights frizz and enhances curls such as the Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner by Bumble & bumble. This will give your curls shape and shine upon getting out of the shower. Next, towel dry your hair and grab your Curl Crème. Keep in mind there are two different types of crème; 1) Defining creme which is for a fine, soft curl or 2) Calming crème which is for a tight curl that tends to have more frizz.

Use a quarter size amount to start (you can always add more if you need to). Run the crème through the hair. Comb it through so it disperses evenly. Divide hair into sections and twist random pieces of hair, creating little spirals. You can change the size and directions of the way you twist to give the curls varying dimensions and shapes. If you have the time, let it air dry about 40% before diffusing. If not, you can still get great style. Attach your diffuser to your hairdryer, grab your Does it All hair spray and flip your head over. Set the dryer on a low setting that is still hot. Begin diffusing the hair underneath by holding the diffuser on a certain area for no more than 20-30 seconds at a time. Give the hair a light mist with your spray every 2 min or so. A great trick is to keep the diffuser moving and don’t touch your hair with your hands very much. The more you touch and mess with curly hair, the more it will frizz and expand.

When you notice that most the moisture is out of bottom, flip your head back so you are upright again. Give the hair a spray with your Does It All again and lightly part you hair where you like it to be styled. Just like the first step, keep the diffuser moving and point it at the areas that still need to be dried. Hold the diffuser at each of those areas for about 20 seconds and add more spray as needed.

The great thing about the Does It All Styling Spray is that it won't weigh it down because it is malleable. So if you felt you got a little spray happy or went over board, it wont make your gorgeous curls sticky or hard. This process takes about 10-15 minutes. Even if you don’t dry it 100%, it will dry on its own frizz free.

At the end of this process, you can lightly retwist some of the curls to tame then down if you like. Just remember the less you touch it, the better. No grabbing or scrunching necessary because this could frizz up your luscious locks.

This duo of styling products is my favorite combo for curly hair. I do this myself all the time!

Now call the girls and pick a hot spot. You did not just do all of that for nothing!

Tricks of the Trade: Professional Shine in the Palm of Your Own Hand

Ever wondered how most women on catwalks, television, and salons achieve super shiny hair everyday. You are probably thinking “expensive products of course”. While products can certainly contribute to healthy and lustrous hair, let me share with you a few amazing tricks that I learned from very knowledgeable hairstylists in the industry. You can achieve this shine with just water and a little serum.

It all begins with the temperature of the water in your shower. When shampooing your hair make sure that you rinse it out with warm water. The warm water opens up the cuticle of the hair, which rids the hair of dirt and excess oils. When conditioning the hair make sure to let the conditioner penetrate a little for 1-2 minutes to act as a small conditioning treatment. To save time I like to tell my clients to do this while they soap themselves or shave.

After rinsing 90% of the conditioner out, it is important that you rinse with cool water. I know, you are probably asking yourself, "Who wants to disrupt a soothing warm shower with shocking cold water?"

The drop in temperature is needed to close down the cuticle of the hair locking in any nutrients, moisturizers, and proteins the conditioner contains. It also lays the cuticle flat, which promotes excess shine. So, remember not to skip this important step and only place your head under the water and not your body.

Now for the finishing touch, the serum. A serum makes the hair shine and does not allow the hair to entangle. It protects the hair from the damages done by over exposure to sun and hair styling products. Forget what you have heard before about putting on the serum after blow-drying and air drying your hair. Many stylists recommend to add the serum at the end of the blow-dry as a finishing product simply because it lays flyaway hair or frizz flat. However, I have found, that this also makes the hair look oily and streaky. When applying serum to dry hair, you are simply adding a layer of product on the surface of the hair.

Instead, allow the serum to accentuate your natural shine: a natural shine that is a result of penetrating the serum during the blow-drying process on damp hair, while the cuticle is still soft and vulnerable to the product.

Work through one pump of serum (approximately the size of a quarter), along with any of your everyday products, into your damp hair, then dry as your normally would. It will appear as though the shine is eminating from within each strand of hair.

I recommend Kerastase Chroma Riche pump serum for highlighted, colored treated, or dry to normal hair and both Kerastase Oleo Relax pump serums for curly or dry rebellious hair. Remember, while the product is a contributing factor, it is the way you use it that is most important.

Now for the last and most important step!

Remember to always go out and show it off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Guide to Beautiful Beachin' Hair

So it's summertime. You've worked your tushy off to get your best beach body. You have your base tan. You've been eating healthier. You've become more active. Your transformation into Gisele or Jessica (or insert supermodel name here) is virtually complete.

Except for the hair..

It's frizzy and unmanageable. It's frizzy when it's humid. It's frizzy when it's not. It's frizzy after running. It's frizzy a week after leaving the salon.

All you know is that you can't tame the hair no matter what you do to it. So you do a quick fix and throw it up in a ponytail! Why bother?

So why does the hair act out in this perfect L.A. weather? Let’s start at the root (of the problem - not the hair).

Frizzy hair is basically dehydrated hair. Your hair becomes porous and loses its natural ability to hold moisture. The cuticle layers loses it's bond that holds these layers tightly together. Over time, the texture of hair becomes brittle and coarse as more layers become vulnerable to the elements (sun, salt, sand, etc.).

Just because it is humid, doesn't mean your hair is going to suck up all that moisture. In fact, the opposite. The humidity artificially swells up the cuticle, forcing the layers apart. The sun and heat dries out the layers and you are again left with FRIZZ!

So what do you do? Smooth your frizz out with the Brazilian Blowout! It kills the frizz and reduces the curl by about 75% so you can still have "beachy hair". Unlike the Japanese strengtheners, it does not make the hair "pin-straight". It does, however, make your hair easy to manage while maintaining some body and wave. Many of my clients have told me that their blow drying time has dropped by more than half.

We noticed that many salons offer the Brazilian Blowout from $450-$650. We've decided to provide the service for only $350. No one should have to skimp on looking fabulous.

Want a quick-fix product instead?

Try out our Kerastase Oleo-Relax product line. It relaxes the curl, making blow-drying easier and is infused with an anti-humidity ingredient. Wanna embrace your curls but reject the FRIZZ?

Regardless of the treatment you use, you still need to protect you hair at the beach. The Gelee Aqua-Proof has UV protectants but also protects your hair for when you are in the salty ocean or hanging ten off your board!

We've endured a really long, hard winter. You shouldn't have to endure a long, frizzy summer. I hope these tips helped.

Innovation - A New Frontier of Thought

At a recent birthday dinner, the topic of conversation at the table came to a project that one of the guests was working on. She heard on NPR of communities participating in Garden Cooperatives. Aubrey and I were immediately intrigued.

It seems that a neighborhood community had organized to share each other's garden crops. Every other week, the neighbors would drop off a box of fresh picked fruits and vegetables to a central location. Then they would be sorted and redistributed to each participating family. Imagine receiving a wide selection of freshly picked, backyard grown, inexpensive produce dropped off every couple of weeks.

I then discovered that some communities have organized Farmer's Market Co-ops or Farm Co-ops. In this idea, communities would pool funds and share in the responsibility of picking up Farm Fresh produce for the entire group. The large order would save money, the single trip would save time and the direct buying would ensure freshness.

This got me thinking about the times in which we live and the ingenious responses that have been born. Rather than throw money at problems these days, more people are reaching for ideas. I've heard that the enthusiasm surrounding the Ingenuity Festival in Cleveland is through the roof. Oprah has been featuring innovative ways to decorate with no budget (furniture swapping.)

Every business and industry is evaluating the way they operate in hopes of addressing the times. Green Innovation is the new buzz word. Cost saving ideas are multiplying like rabbits - just type in "money saving ideas" in Google and prepare to read.

It is an exciting time in which we live. Sure our belts might need tightening, our sleeps might be more restless and our worry lines might deepen, but we are being called to action on a global level. NEW IDEAS are imperative for our tomorrow.

LA Fashion Week at the California Market Center

This year, Studio DNA was selected to provide hair direction for the WNWN's presentation of Los Angeles Fashion Week at the California Market Center. For three days, our team of talented stylists implemented over 10 looks in three days, sometimes transitioning a look in 15 minutes. That comes to over 230 heads of hair - in a very small tent - on a cold spring weekend - with a ton of product!!! At least we had wonderful models from Sills Models to work with.

Aubrey, along with his key stylists (Rosie, Summer, Lindsey and Dane) and the amazing crew of stylists from both of salons, did an amazing job creating so many distinct looks. I am very proud of them all.

"The Adrenalin rush of booking and signing our biggest fashion show gig to date could not prepare me for the Adrenalin rush I experienced during the actual three days of doing LA Fashion week. The most Amazing Rush I think I have experienced in my career yet. Sure I 've worked on many fashion shows before, behind and in front of the TV cameras, but to be the Artistic Director for Hair, and with work with 17 designers, 30 models, and over 35 hairstylists and ( make up artists - Polaris Cosmetics Love them! ) over three days was incredible. I believe any leader is only as good as their team, and I had an incredible team. Rosie, Dane Lindsey and Summer were my Key Team and worked effortlessly to help make this all happen, so did all of our staff who shared in the three day experience. My key team and I spend weeks story boarding, sharing ideas, agreeing to disagree, taking risks and challenging each which in my opinion, makes a great recipe for success. If the audience in the house could only imagine what goes on behind backstage, I think there jaws would fall open. Things change constantly backstage, and there is not much time for planning or "thinking" about it once the show has started. There is no "cut" lets do it again, once the show starts you have one shot to impress, and boy did we impress! Doing four to sometimes 6 shows in one night, and being told we have up 45 minutes to change the looks on our models, and then be told that we only have 15 min to change the looks of all the models, immediately makes you want crawl out from the tent and run away. Luckily that feeling only lasts for about 20 sec until you compose yourself, pull yourself together and realize we now only have 14 min and 40 seconds left and running away is really not an option. What you do instead is turn to the backstage manager and smile, put you thumbs up, and say "You got it they'll be ready in 15!! For me it's like walking to the edge of a really high cliff ( and I am afraid of heights ) and jumping into a river below ( which I did for the first time ever last summer while river rafting ) and you know you are going to be OK because there is water below, however the butterflies and the Adrenalin rush makes you feel like you can pass out any minute. Thankfully you don't, so, you crank up the music and the energy back stage and you line up your team, we all walk to the edge of the cliff together and we jump making sure we hold hands and have the best time on the way down. You pop back up from being under water, lie on your back floating looking up to the cliff you just jumped from and think, I wanna do it again, I wanna do it again!

One other person responded to our newsletter, John Livesay. I had no idea what to expect when he sent me a link to a speech he gave at NoHo Arts Center for New Thought. Quite honestly, there was a moment when I may have missed this (or quite frankly, dismissed this.)

But I took a deep breath and I clicked on the link and I watched. I've watched at least 15 times since then. So much of what John had to say in his 20 minute presentation has triggered thoughts and ideas dormant amidst the noise of day to day living. I have been really inspired. It Is Often Easier To Inspire...

...than to allow ourselves to be inspired.

Our very existence is a source of inspiration. As long as we are breathing, we can breathe life into others. In fact, the word inspire comes from the latin 'inspirare' which means 'to breathe in'.

But the transfer of inspiration between two people is seldom thwarted by the giver's inability to give, but by the receiver's inability to receive.

Many believe that to be inspired, our soul must be shaken to its core; that great ideas must challenge our very thinking. But that is simply not true.

Inspiration is as simple as the act of taking in a breath; or allowing someone's very existence to inform your life, thus inspiring new action, new ideas and new dedication. It is with this thought in mind that we ask you to read the following:

Feel good moment. We were having Breakfast at Clofutis (most delicious Eggs Benedict in LA)on Sunset Plaza watching all the beautiful people and cars pass by. As a city bus headed East it was shortly followed by an older man, with colorful suspenders attempting to catch it. We watched in wonder, for this man had a disability that prevented him from running, as he gained ground -could he muster the energy to make it in time? In his haste he didn't realize his wallet had fallen out of his pocket. He caught the bus and boarded. As the bus pulled away, a woman stepped out from the boutique where she was shopping, and picked up the wallet. She looked towards the bus but, it was too late. We watched her turn to the sales clerk and then look around as if hoping to find a solution in the emptiness of the morning sidewalk. Everyone at the restaurant was witness to this and felt a sudden sense of despair. There she stood - 30'ish. very attractive, Auburn hair, form-fitting slacks were tucked into knee-high leather boots, a cream silk blouse accentuating the striking figure - a leopard print bag only complemented her style. She returned to the store - as we returned to our breakfast. About 30 minutes had passed when coming back into view was the man with the colorful suspenders. I presumed he was kicked off of the bus when he couldn't pay - who knows how far his free ride had lasted. The sales clerk ran out to him - you could tell she was relating the earlier events of his wallet - but where was it now? At that moment, from across Sunset Plaza, the striking woman emerged from R.Cavali waving his wallet in the air. Studio DNA on Beverly is extremely proud to be featuring the amazing work of James Owens. His work - self-titled "Car Noir" - depicts a bygone era of sexy cars and even sexier women. His work is dark, dangerous and filled with pulp fiction romance. Yet, somehow, my immediate response to them is joyful and exciting - like a kid about to play cops and robbers.

Here is some information about the artist, James Owens.

James Owens was born with gasoline in his veins.

Born and raised in Detroit MI, America’s rich history of the automobile runs deep in his family. “Half my family worked in the auto industry. Both my grandfathers worked in the industry. On my mother’s side, my grandfather went to work for Ford Motor Company in the late 20’s.

That was even before they opened the massive Rouge River Plant. My dad retired from Ford, my brother designs for General Motors and my cousins are employed by the big three.”

Jim earned his BFA in 1986 from The Center for Creative Studies in Detroit MI. For nearly two decades he worked with some of the biggest ad agencies in the world creating story boards and finished illustrations for Ford, Chrysler, General Motors as well as AAA, Philips Electronics, Dupont, Home and Gardens Television and Dreamworks.

Although trained as a product illustrator, doing airbrushed cutaways of shock absorbers was not his idea of fun. “I prefer paintings that have some human element in them. I want to see the artists brush and choices on the canvas.”

Recent work has included a series of paintings combining his love for Cars and Film Noir. Full of dames that are sweet and deadly, and cars with big trunks, Jim refers to them as “Car-Noir”.

Today Jim works out of his studio in Southern California where the sun always shines, birds always sing and all the little hot-rodders are happy.

His work will be displayed at Studio DNA Beverly at 7218 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036 until April 30th, 2009. Feel free to stop by anytime. Cardpacks and Books featuring his work are available for purchase. His work is also available for sale. You may purchase originals and limited prints.

"While many salons claim that their procedures are safe, the skinny on Brazilian straightening is that all the products contain formaldehyde." Do your products have formaldehyde? Have you ever had any complaints?

Also, I forgot to ask THE STYLIST how much the procedure costs when I was in the last time.

This is Danny Leclair, co-owner of Studio DNA. Thank you for your email. I really appreciate you bringing us your concerns.
The product we use comes in three options No-Formaldehyde, 2% Formaldehyde and 4% Formaldehyde. We use the first two only.
The primary difference regarding these two products is that the 2% Formaldehyde product will last longer than the Formaldehyde Free product. The exact amount of time depends on the texture of the hair, the upkeep and the application.

Now, I am not going to tell you that the 2% Formaldehyde is 100% risk free. Of course, prolonged and consistent exposure to Formaldehyde will certainly have long-term effects. However, much of the information condemning this products is alarmist and inaccurate. There is one article in particular that is written on a blog that refers to an Allure article to which there is no link. It claims many things:

1. The product has not received FDA approval because it is a cosmetic product and therefore has not been regulated or investigated prior to entering the country. That is false. Any topical product in the cosmetic industry is subject to manufacturing review. It is not under the purview of the Food and Drug Administration but it is scrutinized for safety and security. Many products over the years have never made it to the marketplace due to its effects on test subjects. Remember, this is what sparked organizations to protest product manufacturers that test on animals.
2. Formaldehyde levels should never reach greater than .02% in any product. That is not entirely true. There are many products we use that have higher concentrations. Products that are applied directly to the skin must have lower levels of Formaldehyde because of the absorption factor. Our skin absorbs creams and make-up including the toxins within them. Since it is often worn all day and often reapplied throughout the day, it increases the risk. Higher concentrations of Formaldehyde would be dangerous in makeup and certain skin creams. For the Brazilian, very little is applied directly to the scalp for extended periods of time. It is mostly applied to the hair and removed in the process. Any additional sediment is removed when rinsed out or there is heat applied.
3. There was also some reference to a woman who died using the product. In my research I discovered more details of the story. The difference here is that woman left the product on her for over 4 days. She applied it herself with no supervision and she applied too much in a low ventilated environment. It would be like stripping your floors with the windows closed and then falling asleep in the room. Since this story was brought to my attention, I have heard from other people that there were as many as 8 women who have died. There is no concrete evidence of this, which only goes to show how information travels.

Again, I am not telling you that there are absolutely no risks involved. For instance, some may be concerned by the steam that rises during the blowdry/flat ironing phase. The sediment that may be contained in this airborne steam is disconcerting for some since Formaldehyde is classified as a carcinogen. We recommend the following:

1. Wear a mask during this process. The stylist may choose to do the same.
2. Move to a ventilated area. We will always have a fan running and a door open. We will perform the service in an open space to be sure to blow everything away from you and the stylist.
3. Choose the Formaldehyde Free product. This will eliminate any concern as long as you are aware that it may shave up to 2 months off the longevity. (For instance 3-4 months vs. 2 months)

I really appreciate you bringing us your concerns. Please know that we would never fault you for making any decision regarding your health and well-being. You should never feel coerced into anything in which you are not entirely comfortable. Also know, that we believe that either product, if used properly with the appropriate precautions, and not over used or saturated are safe.

As for the cost, there are two prices - $350 for the Global Keratin Straightening Treatment or $175 for the Brazilian Blowdry Treatment. The difference is the level of straightening/body your hair has when you are done. The Blowout takes significantly longer to complete than the Blowdry. You can discuss that with STYLIST NAME HERE when you are there for your next appointment.

The Brazilian Blow Out vs Bio Ionic Retex Systems

Are you someone who has curly, unruly, or dull hair but are frightened by those permanent chemical ‘straighteners’? Well, the opportunities to manage your wild mane have just become bountiful as hair technology grows by leaps and bounds.
Since we opened, Studio DNA has struggled with the question of ‘straighteners and relaxers’. We wanted to be sure that we provided the best service, using high quality products that did little to NO damage.

Studio DNA has virtually eliminated all relaxing systems from their menu. Any chemical alteration to your hair will compromise the integrity of your hair unless the product provides built in protections. Most relaxers are so time sensitive, we felt that we were doing a disservice to our clients by offering ‘relaxers’. There are certain cases when they are appropriate, but considering what we have discovered, well, we feel we’ve found some amazing solutions for a majority of hair types.

Since we opened our doors, we’ve offered an amazing service called the Bio-Ionic Retex System. For those of you that don't know Bio-Ionic is a chemical straightening system. Unlike the Japanese straightening system (to which it is most often compared), it is charged by negative ions. Those are the ions you want to have around you; they are good for you. Negative ions produce minerals that break down water clusters allowing the hydration molecules to enter the hair strand leaving it conditioned, soft and straight. The bio ionic system is a permanent ‘straightening’ system that can last up to 6 months when you will begin to notice your curly roots becoming part of the texture of your hair. The results depend on timing. Most people use Bio-Ionic to accomplish bone straight hair, but some want to leave some of the wave in their hair.

I've grown to love this product. People are slightly hesitant when they find out that it’s permanent. It’s a fantastic product and does virtually no damage to the hair; however, there are still restrictions on the use of this product. For instance, Bio Ionic is only compatible with its own hair care products (or any product that is sodium hydroxide free.) In order to maintain your result and your hair’s health, it is important that you use the right product. It is also important that you do not apply stress to your hair such as other chemical services or heavily chlorinated pools—at least for while after the service. Additionally, your hair must have the strength to endure the service. It is important that you provide an honest and complete history of your hair so that your stylist can be sure to guide you properly.

If the word permanent leaves you shaking in fear, then listen up because this is about to blow your mind!!!!

Keratin - Keratin is an extremely strong protein which is a major component in skin, hair, nails, hooves, horns, and teeth. The amino acids or proteins which combine to form keratin have several unique properties, and depending on the levels of the various amino acids/proteins, keratin can be inflexible and hard, like hooves, or soft, as is the case of skin and hair. Most of the keratin that people see is actually dead; hair, skin, and nails. If the dead cells are kept in good condition, they will serve as an insulating layer to protect the delicate new keratin below them.

Hair, nails and skin generally start off healthy, shiny and moisturized but tend to become dry and brittle because the keratin is being pushed to great lengths due to, aging, environment, over processing, and heat styling (like excessive blow-drying and flat ironing.) In general, the thicker the layer of keratin, the healthier the hair, nail and skin will be. Keeping the external layer of keratin moisturized will also keep it healthy and prevent dullness, cracking and splitting.

Bottom Line: As our hair and skin ages and is exposed to harsh environment conditions and “bad” homecare habits either through using cheap products or over heat styling, the natural keratin is compromised and often lost, leaving the hair and skin dull, lifeless and in bad condition. I CHOOSE TO CELEBRATE THE CHINESE NEW YEAR

For so many years, Aubrey and I found outrageous ways to ring in the New Year. We would vigorously shake off the old year with noise, music and crowds of people. Whatever the event (or the country in which it was held), we intended for it to be cathartic; cleansing us of all of the soot and grime that gathered during the preceding year. On the other side of that threshold of time, we would coin some phrase to denote the new year like 'Two-Thousand and Great!' or 'Two-Thousand and Heaven!' or 'Two-Thousand and Fix!' Some mantra to help calibrate our spiritual GPS.

But this year was different. We gathered with friends and enjoyed heart warming company. We all laughed at how absurd the previous year had been for all of us. We shared stories and remarked on the parallels of our lives. We shook our heads in numb disbelief at the year that past. It seemed as though we gathered to breathe a collective sigh of relief. In comparison to years past, we practically whispered our declaration of the new year. And though we coined our phrase, it never felt quite like a commitment. It felt more like we were simply keeping to the tradition.

But something changed on January 20th. Watching Barack Obama fumble through the oath of office, my heart and soul began partying like it was 1999. It was official, my New Year celebration had begun.

I began watching the footage as a matter of course, to keep abreast of the 'news' if you will. Before too long, I was marveling at the millions who braved the travel, the cold and the expense so they could present on that day. I became enthused by the President's call to action. I was relieved to hear him boldly condemn the failed policies of the previous administration. But mostly, I was soothed by his clarity of vision.

On January 26th, the Chinese New Year was celebrated and since I was sort of laxe with January 1st, I decided to do some research.

2008 - Year of the Rat - 2008 will be an Earth Rat year. Rat years are always choppy and appeal mostly to those with a finely-developed sense of economy. But the Earth Rat year (The last one was 1948) is also chockablock with market upsets and other unspeakable bolts from the blue. Think surprise events which jolt your synapses and give your heart goose bumps. I am not threatening earthquakes or typhoons, although we will surely see our share of those. The bolts from the blue will be more personal than that. They will take the form of accidents or mishaps due to inattention, clumsiness or pure stupidity. In an Earth Rat year, we learn (usually the hard way) that we cannot possibly anticipate what might happen next.

In this coming year, the fragile quality of the world's financial condition will become glaringly obvious. People and governments in the western world will wake up to the fact that they cannot go on spending more money than they have and get away with it. In fact, many very rich people will barely have time to preserve existing finances.

Something intriguing about Rat years is that at first they appear to bode only wealth and bounty. But such glittering harvests are merely the calm before the storm and hunger pangs of future shortages. Nobody will be spared. Already in February, inflation will be on the rise. People all over the world will see their buying power diminish.

2009 - Year of the Ox - We will feel the yoke of responsibility coming down on us this year. No success can be achieved without conscientious efforts. The trials and tribulations the Ox year brings will be mainly on the home front. It is a good time to settle domestic affairs and put your house in order.

Way-out fashions, abstract art forms and newfangled notions will be given an impassive stare by the phlegmatic Ox, while politics and diplomacy will simply be treated with indifference. Better stick to routine and support conservative policies. Frivolities are out!

This year will no doubt bear fruit, but the motto is: "No work, no pay!" Time waits for no man; if we are too lazy to sow then we can blame no one if we have nothing to reap. We will find a great many things requiring our attention, and the list of what needs to be done will seem endless. The Spartan influence of the Ox will be a constantly cracking whip over our heads. Better to apply oneself diligently than waste time arguing with the authorities. They will prevail, as the year of the Ox favors discipline.

Most conflicts this year will arise more from a lack of communication and refusal to give in on small technicalities than anything else. But hang on and be patient. Everything will be sorted out and we will be rewarded for our efforts--so long as we remember to do things the conventional way. This is no time for tricky shortcuts.

For the rebels, it may be worthwhile to point out that although the stoical Ox is soft-spoken, he carries a big stick, and this is his year.

SO OUT WITH THE RAT and IN WITH THE OX!

That is why I choose to celebrate the Chinese New Year this year.

Not because I am convinced of these random predictions I found on the internet, but because those predictions are symbolic of the sense of responsibility I feel that we are collectively embracing. It's as if the veneer has fallen revealing a mass of decomposing garbage. Up until now, we've ignored the smell. But finally, we've acknowledged the mess and accepted the fact that it is ours (collectively) to clean up.

I do not believe Barack Obama or his cabinet or our government will save the day. But his clarity of vision has inspired us to steady our gaze on the same horizon. And I know that with that much energy locked on a common goal, we are destined to succeed.

This Christmas Eve, the Savior was in town, and his name was Eugene Park. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, my hair is GOLD to me. So when my roommate offered to help my bangs out a bit, what with the trench Christmas shopping had dug in my wallet, I said okay. Fast forward to me sitting in a chair with huge tears welling up in my eyes, and choice swear words spewing like Christmas confetti out my mouth...

Eugene is awesome. He gave me exactly the evenness i wanted, removed all the irritating bits and pieces and fly-aways, and kept everything I wanted intact. Most importantly, because I like classic, simple styles, he kept me from looking like a little old lady. He LISTENED to what I wanted. Do you know how hard that is to find in a stylist? He's at the Beverly branch, and I'm thinking of going back to him for color. In case you still don't have an idea of how grateful and appreciative I am of this man, consider this: I don't write reviews all that much (although I should). Especially not when I'm otherwise annoyed at having a messed-up holiday.

Just recently in the news, there was an announcement that the California State Legislature was preparing to make yet another slash in the education budget. Specifically, thousands of teachers' jobs would be cut as well as salaries, retirement funds and ultimately, standards. In the Los Angeles area alone, we're expected to lose approximately 2500 teachers. This would increase class sizes to 35-40 students per class.

Now, compare that to how California ranks in the nation with testing standards.....47. This is truly disturbing since research has already shown us that children learn more effectively when the pupil to teacher ratio is much smaller.

When I was a child growing up, there was a very lovely lady named Margaret who was in my family's life. Margaret was a teacher in her younger years for several decades in a one-room school house in Iowa. She taught kindergarten thru 8th grade and she did it with such love and devotion.

My family and I were fortunate to experience that love and devotion first hand. My mom was a widow when I was four and had to go out in the work force to support four children. Margaret stepped in to help out wherever she could. She was a close friend of my grandfather’s and we eventually referred to her as our grandmother. I came to realize that it was her exceptional teaching skills, devotion and patience that had shaped my life and spared me from a life of trouble and dereliction. I could only imagine how many kids during her career felt the same way.

Where am I going with this? Stop and think!

You manipulated the numbers in your checkbook because a teacher taught you math. Most of your day is possible thanks to a teacher!

Now we have a President who has called us all to service. He has inspired us to give back to our communities. It is time to step up and start giving back. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of recognition than our teachers. I think we should all ask ourselves, “What can I do for a teacher(s) in my life?” Then I suggest we do it!

Throughout my career, I have had many teachers for clients and have given them a teachers’ discount of 10%. I am prepared to give a larger discount to show my appreciation for their conviction, selflessness, love and devotion. Lindsey comes to us from Albuquerque, New Mexico where she worked as a stylist, Salon Coach and Technical Educator for Mark Pardo Salons. She was voted as one of top 3 Hairstylists in Albuquerque in "Best of Burque 2007" in the Alibi Newspaper. She has been a NAHA entrant from 2004-2008, a presitgious competition held annually. She has worked in Editorial, Fashion and Television, all the while building a strong clientele who, despite having been left for Hollywood, have sung her praises on YELP to help her build quickly.

Introducing our Most Recent Graduate - Amy Panero

Amy was our first hire. We found her working at a Running Shoe Store and by what I believe was fate unfolding, we discovered she was attending the Sassoon Academy. We saw this as opportunity knocking. We answered the door. Amy worked as our friend desk, an assistant, an assistant floor coordinator and now a stylist. Along with Karen, Tomassa and Sasha, they became the back bone of Studio DNA. We are so grateful to have them and we are so proud to announce Amy's graduation. Darryl Stephens Agrees to Shave Some Heads

STUDIO DNA HOLLYWOOD PRESENTS SECOND ANNUAL CUT A THON

It has just been confirmed that Darryl Stephens from Logo’s Noah’s Arc will be joining Studio DNA and their team to shave some heads for the first ever Studio DNA Shave-A-Thon. Darryl plays the title character Noah for two seasons of Noah’s Arc and will headline the soon-to-be released film version scheduled to come out later this month. Darryl got his big break on MTV’s extremely popular series Undressed and has been very busy doing television and film ever since including Ugly Betty, Another Gay Movie and Bolden.

We are very excited to have Darryl with us. We are big fans!

Edie McClurg will be Shaving Some Heads

Edie McClurg, best known for her hilarious and touching roles in Film and Television (Pee Wee Herman's Playhouse, Natural Born Killers, Valerie, 7th Heaven), will be helping Studio DNA during it's second Annual Cut-A-Thon.

Rosie and Tina - Hybrid Stylists

No...this does not mean they run on gas and electric. But it does mean they will become more efficient to our clients.

As many of you may know, Studio DNA has opened a second location in Hollywood at 7218 Beverly Blvd. Since we opened several months ago, many of our clients who live closer to that area have asked if some of our staff members would work over there from time to time. Most notably, Rosie and Tina, have had the most inquiries. So, it only makes sense to give the client what they want.

Effective the week of October 6th, Rosie and Tina will begin a hybrid schedule between our Hollywood Location and our Santa Monica Location. The days chosen were chosen specifically to accommodate the client to the best of our ability.

Their schedules are as follows:

Tina will be working, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in Santa Monica. Her hours will be elongated to accommodate her existing clientele. Tuesday is 10-7, Thursday is 10-7 and Saturday is 9-6.
Tina will be working Wednesday and Friday at the Hollywood Location. Her hours will be Wednesday 10-6 and Friday 11-7.

Rosie will be working, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at the Santa Monica location. Her hours will be Wednesday 11-7, Saturday, 10-6 and Sunday, 11-6

Setting The Right Tone

Blond hair is very hard to maintain. As a stylist and as a blond myself, I know firsthand the struggle to keep your blond looking fresh and vibrant. That is why your stylist may suggest toners whenever getting your color done. It is the best way to bring your color to life.

There are several types of toner. So often in the salon we get people who want to have very blond hair or highlights. For some people, their hair just won’t get that blond using all of the conventional methods. On several occasions, I have had to use toners to help me get to the desired tone.

For instance, when lightening someone’s hair, you have to go through several stages. These include a brown/red, a brassy orange, and a yellow stage. Remember playing with the color wheel as a child? Remember watching colors transform as they passed through each other – Red to Orange to Yellow?

Well imagine your hair passing through these stages and getting stuck in the orange or canary yellow stage and you want to be an amazing bombshell blond. This is a perfect opportunity to use a toner to counteract the orange or yellow color.
Toners can also be used to freshen up an existing blond. Most blonds have experienced the fading or yellowing due to sun exposure, hard water, inferior shampoos, smog, etc. The hair begins to look dull and brassy. Using a toner can brighten up and bring your blond back to life.

If your hair lightens lighter than desired you can use a toner to ‘tone’ it down. Sometimes I will use toners on clients who have dark hair and want light brown or caramel highlights. You can also use tones to provide some interested depth to a red head. Toners are not needed every single time. Some people are fortunate that their desired color can be achieved without any additional support. But the fact is every person is different which suggests that color will respond differently. Toners are another tool a stylist has available to them to bring some to their best possible look.

Schwarzkopf makes a toning shampoo for at home use for people to use. Simply use it like a regular shampoo to freshen up your blonds, browns and reds. A word of caution though, when using any toning shampoos at home, do not use it every day and do not leave in the hair too long. If left on too long or used improperly, you could end up with an undesirable color.

Now that you all have the scoop on color toners I’m going to let you in on one more secret. No matter what color your hair is you can also get a clear translucent toner that seals the color, adds condition, and gives long lasting shine! We usually call this a gloss.

Please feel free to ask your Studio DNA stylist about adding this service to your next visit. It is our commitment that you are apprised of all charges. If your stylist feels that you are in need of a toner, they will let you know during the service so you can be aware of the expense. The typical charge for toner ranges from $20-$60 dependent on the amount and quality of the hair and the color in question.

All Things New and Newsworthy

So it has been an amazingly transforming Summer. As many of you are aware, Aubrey and I have taken on a second location on Beverly near La Brea. It is a gorgeous space in a great area with enormous potential. Many of the stylists have stayed on and we have taken on a few new stylists. We have been working very hard to implement some creature comforts and provide for the community we're in. As if that wasn't enough, we have taken on an ambitious project by participating in this year's AIDS Walk and producing another CUT-A-THON. We hope to raise $25,000. More details to follow.

For now, let me get you caught up on some of the changes at both locations:

Beverly/Hollywood Location

1. We are proud to introduce our newest stylists: Dane, Cameron and Angela
2. We are proud to introduce our first graduate from our education program: Leslie Galvez. She will be working on the floor for two days a week while she begins to build her clientele.
3. We have introduced VALET PARKING. We will have it every afternoon and evening from Tuesday through Friday and all day Saturday. It is $3 with validation. Be sure to ask your stylist or assistant to request your car approximately 10 minute prior to being done. This will ensure a much shorter wait to retrieve your car.
4. We are introducing a private room for services that may require sensitivity or modesty.
5. We are bringing in new chairs, new lights, new furniture and new services. Keep an eye out for the gradual transformation.

Broadway/Santa Monica Location

1. We are very happy to introduce Katie Hafner to our team of stylists.
2. We are extremely sad to see Leo go, but wish him all of the best in his new endeavor as a Vidal Sassoon Educator.
3. We have introduced some amazing product lines such as Moroccan Oil, Sidlab and La Bella Donna.
4. We are also introducing a new Assistant to our Team - Audra. You will love her.

At our Beverly Location, we have unfortunately, lost Melody House and Brendan Padilla from our team. Melody and Brendan are amazing stylists who were previously employed by L Salon before we took over the management and ownership.

Melody has always had a fondness for extensions and was given an opportunity to train with an extension specialist. For 6 months, we have had the great pleasure of having Leo Bisinha as a member of our team of stylists. He very quickly became a member of the Studio DNA family and favorite among our clients.

Unfortunately for us, Leo will be leaving Studio DNA to pursue his dream of becoming an educator with the Sassoon Academy. Our loss is most certainly their gain.

While we will miss him, we believe he is going on to do some amazing things and we look forward to hearing about all of his adventures.

Look of the Month - July 2008 - And There Were Many

We had a very hard time just picking one. The month flew by. Time and again, the stylists were creating amazing looks. Our clients have been ecstatic. I've received email that have read "The Best Cut I have ever had", "I feel free" and "I should have done this a long time ago."

There was Laura Vittucci cut and colored by Tina Jun. Tina initially gave Laura extensions several months ago. After a while, Laura decided it was time to go short. She wanted something sexy and sassy. Tina gave all of that and more.

Jenna Laski had long beautiful hair. But it was summer and it was time. After several consultations with owner Aubrey Loots, they decided to take the plunge. It is amazing how buoyant she became when all that hair was gone.

We had some amazing creative cuts from Juliana and Rosie and Summer (see next month's Look of the Month).

But it was Leo whose precision cut transformed his client into an entirely different person. Marta Brunner went from long and unkempt to a tight, funky pixie cut that gave Marta a strong flirty look. You can see it in her smile, how much she is enjoying the cut.

Way to go team. Can't wait to see what August brings.

Addition to the Family: Studio DNA Broadway has a New Sister

Aubrey and I are proud to announce a new addition to the family. Studio DNA on Broadway is the proud older sister to Studio DNA on Beverly located at 7218 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036.

Formerly (or at least soon to be formerly) known as L Salon, it was previously owned by Michele Jonietz who did an amazing job fostering her business over 14 years. Now Michele has two beautiful children to whom her undivided attention is focussed. Rather than split her focus or neglect either, she decided to sell the salon to us. We are very excited and can't wait to give you the tour.

Advertising in the Guise of Journalism - LA TIMES has lost perspective

Aubrey brought home the LA Times today. An exceptional occurrence for so many reasons notwithstanding an overwhelmingly busy life at the moment that precludes such pleasures. So, I was intrigued by his reasons for carting it home. I thought, perhaps, it was related to the slow unwind of the primaries, a new controversy on the campaign trail or even something about Studio DNA or the products from South Africa.

I was not prepared for the two page PAID ADVERTISEMENT that is in the format of an op-ed piece titled, "Battling for America's Soul" purchased by The American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property (no seriously – PROPERTY). The Advertisement (or from hereforth known as the ARTICLE) appears only a page away from a legitimate article about the Supreme Court's recent ruling that it will not delay the issuance of Licenses any further.

The paid article actually provides 9 lengthy reasons why the 'imposition' of Same-Sex Marriage on the American people 'threatens our nation and faith'. There is even a box where they offer the reassurance to everyone that this piece is not intended to defame or disparage anyone.

It continues to state that this piece is only intended to intellectually debate individuals and organizations who are promoting the homosexual agenda. Agenda, according to the dictionary, means list, plan or outline for things to be done - plan of action if you will. The homosexual community wishes to be respected, accepted and provided the same rights as everyone else. That’s not a bad plan of action.

If this article is implying that the agenda is hidden or surreptitious in some way, I can assure you my agenda is out for everyone to see. I do not have the time to be planning something crazy behind closed doors.

In my opinion, it is impossible to deny that your arguments are disparaging in one sentence and then in the next refer to my desire to marry the man I love and protect the family I have created as an agenda (hidden or otherwise) and affront to the tradition of marriage and the Catholic Faith. That is like apologizing for spitting in my face by telling me you didn't intend to have green and yellow stuff in it.

It later claims to be arguing against Same-Sex Marriage using arguments based on right reason, natural law and Divine Revelation.

Right? Because a group believe it be so? There are groups much larger than the Catholic Church that believe things differently. Even many who practice Catholicism believe that two people should marry regardless of Sexual Proclivity or Identity. So who, pray tell, defines these righteous arguments for you.

Natural Law? How much footage of homosexuality existing in the Natural World do we need? Is there a specific species of bird or mammal that conclusively has shown no occurrence of homosexual behavior? And will that really make the case of Natural Law? If it is unnatural, why does it continue to occur?

And when all else fails there is Divine Revelation. WHO HAS THE GOD PHONE? Whenever the arguments against same sex marriage begin to weaken, a quick flip of the God Badge seems to do the trick.

The fact is we are all personally tapped into God and that very moral compass provides us the map for our lives. As long as we are not directly harming others through abuse or theft or vandalism, then it should be no concern to others how I live my life. I can not live it fully if I must submit my hearts desire to the congress of others. I will surely be miserable.

But if these arguments are so sacred and powerful, let me try them on for size.

Aubrey and I are getting our License on the 17th because it is right, it is natural and it is divinely inspired - SO THERE!

In honor of this day, I ask the following:

Contact the LA TIMES and let them know your outrage for allowing this AD in the guise of an article to run in the front section of the paper. Let them know that we do not appreciate that they chose to place it one page away from an article legitimately reporting the events surrounding the Supreme Court's Ruling. They are a business first and public servant second - I understand that. However, I seriously believe they showed amazing short sightedness and gross disrespect to its readers. I for one can't trust their reporting again. I make a business decision to never read the paper again.

Look of the Month - Rose Shuman - May 2008 by Juliana

When Rose first stepped into our salon, I was immediately drawn to her. She had beautiful bone structure, amazing complexion and great hair. I took one look and knew this was going to be a cinch. She already had a great cut to work with, she just needed me to help fine tune a few of her concerns.

As we quickly became acquainted, we discussed her hair history, concerns and finally her expectations. She had just moved here from Northern California (my former stomping ground) where she regularly went to a tiny spot called Cowboys & Angels to get her locks cut. From that name alone, I knew she had to be fun and hip and was likely open to trying new things.

One of her biggest concerns was that she works in a professional atmosphere that requires wearing “stuffy” suits most days. And like most young women working in corporate America, Rose hope to find a balance between mature/sophisticated and youthful/trendy.

She was essentially posing the question, “How do I stay true to myself without causing a corporate shake-up?” She wanted a more mature look, but one that would not compromise her age. Though young, professional and driven, she needed her look to reflect this. I assured her that she did not have to look like a soccer mom or a senator to command a presence at work.

Her hair rested a tad bit above her shoulders and had an asymmetrical A-line shape. I cut the back shorter leaving most of her length in the front to frame her face giving it a more appropriate dimension.

From the consultation, I knew she typically wore her hair wavy. This cut is the perfect base to allow her to achieve a versatile look that can either be worn sleek and classic or curly and sassy. And to create that sexier look that most women covet, I designed a graduated line that started high in the back and fluidly finished with long, sexy pieces. As you can see from the photo montage, the cut and the frame really flatter her amazing bone structure (that I envied oh so much).

As you can see, Rose was always beautiful; I simply helped to enhance that beauty by adding a little touch of whimsy and sexiness that I think we all could use. This gives her the best of both worlds.

Elaine was so sweet, and the upcoming line for Seychelles/BC is going to be huge. I already spotted like 10 pairs of shoes I want to make sure and cop for the fall/winter season. Oohhwee! Super cute ladies, Rosie and Summer from Studio DNA, talked to us about their hair salon located in Santa Monica. Let me tell you, they are planning big things for their company, and I am sure I'll be visiting their salon sometime soon.

NANNERSP had some amazing things to say about Summer (all of which I can personally confirm are true - though I would probably register as biased). We love when someon takes the time to tell the world about their brilliance (that's a hint for anyone else who has a blog - we invite you to profess your love for our stylists, anytime, anywhere).

Here is what she had to say, "Friday evening I cheated on my hair stylist, whom I've been faithful to since I moved to LA in 2000. "I was sitting there in Studio DNA perusing through this month’s GQ magazine noticing all the stylish short haircuts and decided it’s time to try a new look. In the past this would have been a big deal and my agents would look at me with disapproval telling me that I would now need to go get new headshots. But now that I no longer have commercial representation and I’m concentrating on producing my own shows it doesn’t matter as much anymore.

Hmmm. It is about time to get some new headshots…"

We are kicking ourselves.

Tami came in for a color consult and left looking absolutely AMAZING! Rosie Lucia did an amazing job blending these two colors. You can see the fluid movement of the red as it flows in and out of the black from underneath.

We were all blown away when she came to the front desk. She was walking on a cloud, ecstatic with her new look. Rosie was virtually giggly with how well it came together.

Many of our clients are familiar with the Bumble & bumble Classic Hairspray and Does it All Hair Spray. For those who have been using either for a while, they will readily admit they have a functionally co-dependent relationship with their spray.

Bumble & bumble found, however, there was a gap between the two so they introduced Spray de Mode.

Tina Jun, one of our Network Educators and a resident stylist with Studio DNA, provides her take on the product.

“The new magic in a bottle from Bumble & bumble is referred to as a ‘FASHION SPRAY’ or ‘SPRAY DE MODE’. It is a versatile spray that will remember its shape even after you brush it, tong it, crimp it, and even run your fingers through it every 5 minutes. It has the amazing hold of the ‘classic’ and the flexibility of the ‘does it all’. It has the most memory out of all the B&b sprays, so it will remember the hairstyle even after you forgot about it!! . I find myself reaching for it more and more since it does a lot of the thinking for me. Extensions Need Not Be A Growing Concern

We hear from a many women that in the last 5 years they have considered extensions seriously. Whether it is changing their look dramatically, surviving cancer, dealing with fine hair or creating a look for an upcoming event, extensions are considered as one of many options to address the disconnect a woman feels between their current look and their perceptions of themselves.

At Studio DNA, Tina Jun and I, are certified in the art of extensions. We have performed several extension installations to ‘rave’ reviews. Many of our clients have expressed awe inspiring changes in their lives, manifesting soon after they had their extensions installed.

It is important for us to be certain that our clients are aware of every consideration: price, maintenance and most importantly, their reasons.

Let’s manage the easiest one – price.

Studio DNA does not profit from the actual hair. We purchase it from the Hair Shop in Los Angeles which we consider to be very reasonable for the quality. Our clients can pick up and purchase the hair directly. If the client wants us to arrange pick up, we will for a small handling fee.

Many clients have heard horror stories about hair falling out and breaking off. Well fear not. We use NO GLUE extensions. We use two different types of hair, 909 and 808. The 909 hair extension, also known as Remy hair, is composed of premium young 100% natural human hair. Each strand of 909 Remy hair extension is specially treated to smooth the cuticle in one direction, creating less tangling and clumping. The 909 Remy hair extension is strictly reserved for those who demand the highest quality of hair.

808 hair gets more straight after getting wet where 909 hair gets more wavy. 808 hair has a little bigger diameter so it creates a thick texture where 909 hair is smaller in diameter so it creates a softer texture. Each hair type comes on straight, wavy, and curly so we can inevitably match your hair type. The hair extension is placed into your hair with a copper tube/bead. The beads come in 5 different sizes and 5 different colors. The goal is not match the bead with your hair color, but to and won’t necessarily match the natural growth pattern of your hair. The beads lay flat to your head making it comfortable to sleep, style, and live your life.

As for the service, it starts at $750 for a three hour service including blending and styling. If the client desires an actual haircut, there will be an additional charge for the haircut, but we will quote you before performing the service. No surprises. Probably 75% off all installations will take 3 hours or less. However, in the event it does take longer, we charge $150 per hour in 15 minute intervals. Again, we will let you know the approximate time frame in the consultation so there should be no surprises. We offer general maintenance at $150 per hour with a one hour minimum. This entails securing any loose extensions, moving extensions up the shaft and removing any dead/detached hair to avoid matting or clumping. This will help the longevity and enjoyment of your extensions. It is advised that maintenance occur after approximately 60 days. After 120 days, they should be removed and if so desired, the client should be prepped for the installation of new extensions.

However, maintenance is a joint effort. A client must realize that when they make a commitment to extensions, they make a commitment to maintaining them.

The maintenance of your extensions is not cumbersome. However, there are a few important guidelines you need to follow:

• After washing your hair, never leave it to air dry. By leaving the hair wet for too long, the extensions can slip or fall out completely. Tangling can also occur unless the hair is blown dry.
• Do not wash hair before going to bed rather sleep with hair loosely braided to prevent tangling.
• Swimming is not prohibited; however, the hair should be quickly dried after getting out of the water. It is also advisable to tightly braid and tuck the hair into a cap. The hair should be washed as soon as possible after a swim.
• Take the time each day to make sure your extensions aren't matting. While styling, simply separate extensions from one another with a gentle touch – you never want to yank on your extensions. The natural hair sheds 40-100 strands a day. Over a 4 month period, those little strands that are still trapped in the bind have nowhere to go. By separating them you will prevent them from tangling with each other. This will help in the future removal of the hair, but it will also prolong your enjoyment of the extensions.
• It is advisable that you use hair products that are friendly to your extensions. Ask your stylist to recommend the appropriate products.

So, we’ve considered the price and we’ve considered the maintenance, now the hard part – the reason. It is our belief that our clients should only pursue dramatic change from a desire to pursue a new experience, not to escape an undesirable one. While this is a subtle distinction, it is an important one.
I’ll use the issue of fine hair as an example. When a client complains of fine, lifeless hair, we will ask them what bothers them most about their hair. If they begin to complain that their hair is just another example of their general unhappiness over their look or life, then trying to solve it with hair extensions is certainly not the answer. If, on the other hand, our client tells us how they want to experience the fullness, the styling options and the look of longer hair, then we can be certain that they’ve joyfully prepared themselves for the experience ahead. The issue may be the same, it is the perspective that is significantly different.

In a single afternoon, you can dramatically change your look and your life. At Studio DNA, we not only provide you with that opportunity at a reasonable price using high quality hair and methods, we strive to consider your needs and lifestyle during the process. Hair extensions (as with any of our products and services) should be a catalyst toward inspiring you to your own personal greatness. Anything less and we haven’t done our job.

The Look Of The Month

As a new addition to our blog, we would like to introduce our very first look of the month. Our friend Elie Chow was ready for a change. Her unruly hair had gotten away from her. Extremely busy as a Hollywood Chef, there has been little time to be pampered. Her long locks were much easier to manage, then trying to deal with a style that wouldn't see much action shoved under her chefs hat.

With so much virgin hair, Aubrey was sure to cut off the hair so it could be donated to Locks of Love. Then he worked his magic, providing Elie a style that matched her personality and her lifestyle. This sharp Bob has extra length in the front allowing Elie to bring her back while at work. After work, she can let her hair down and not worry about too much primping because it falls exactly where it is supposed to go. The sharp lines of the cut give her versatility regardless if she flat irons or let's her natural wave return.

Elie mentioned that big life changes usually come shortly after a dramatic change to her look. She has been gearing up to this for months. We look forward to hearing all about the new restaurant? boyfriend? villa in Tuscany? We'll have to wait and see.

Introducing Summer to the Team

"Hair is my passion." That is a direct quote. Summer considers her job to be more than just helping her clients look good, she insists that her clients feel good. From the moment her client arrives, Summer creates an experience that is comfortable, collaborative and above all, luxurious.

Primarily trained under Toni & Guy, Summer has experience with Aveda, Vidal Sassoon, Bumble and Bumble and Redken NY. She went on to become and educator for several year, honing her own skills during the experience.

Recently, Summer moved from San Francisco working briefly at Jim Wayne Salon in Beverly Hills. However, she can't escape her past. Summer continues to travel to San Francisco every 4-6 weeks to cater to a clientele that refused to let her go. We are extremely excited to have Summer on our team. We are certain our clients will love her as much as we do.

Introducing Leo to the Team

Leo is a very recent transplant to Los Angeles. Previously of famed James Joseph Salon in Boston, Leo left a busy clientele and moved to Santa Monica to fulfill a dream. That takes chutzpah.

Born in Brazil and fluent in 3 languages (English, Portuguese and Spanish), Leo approaches every task from many different perspectives. He has experience in hair color techniques from Goldwell, Wella, Redken and Schwarzkopf and intensive haircutting training by a master and former creative director from Vidal Sassoon. Though a very well rounded stylist with 3 years of experience, he is a specialist in men’s haircutting.

What we love most about Leo is his desire to excel, learn and share with his team. In the short time he has been with us, he has already endeared himself to the staff and our clients. We look forward to watching Leo soar in Los Angeles because, quite frankly, it is inevitable.

Trained at Paul Mitchell School, Rosie quickly took on the wonderful world of Salon Education as a Learning Leader. Rosie's career has allowed her to educate others in Photoshoots/Editorial/Make-up and Color/Haircutting as well as Motivational Speaking. Rosie travels the country as a ''Hairstylist/Mentor".

She applies the same enthusiasm to the work she does behind the chair. She has a contagious smile that allows her to Create Magic with all that cross her path. She has an ambitious career plan but it is tempered by a warm hearted and genuine interest in her clients.

Visit to Mielie and Kayalitsha

During our most recent visit with our vendors, I had the distinct privilege of visiting many of the women who work on the Mielie Bags in the Kayalitsha Township. Kayalitsha is a very large township that continues to grow north of Cape Town. Many of the women who live alone are responsible for many dependents in many cases their grandchildren orphaned by HIV and AIDS. While this would seem to be a depressing place, it is so inspiring to see the joy, hope and beauty that grows in this place. It is no wonder that these products are so well received by people all over the world.
